The mods of that place tried to move the entire comm to lemmy.world without any input from the community. The backlash was enough for a bunch of us to create !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone. It was only after we created the new community that the mod team decided to keep their 196 on blahaj.zone open. Now there were 3 196s, ours, the original, and one on lemmy.world.

As far as I can tell, the whole reason it happened was because the mods began to not appreciate how Ada ran the instance as a safe space. It’s mostly speculation, but it seems like certain notable users were deservedly banned from Blahaj, and the mods were either friends or had affinity with those users.

They saw lemmy.world as a neutral ground that most users would accept, but many of us were already quite suspicious of .world, and didn’t feel comfortable on it. As the relatively recent defederation fiasco from anarchist instances demonstrated, were were right to be worried about centralization of Lemmy and political centrism. Such groups are hard to trust for queer people, especially as we’re being abandoned by a mainstream politics in a number of countries.

Fair enough. it’s so weird seeing this federation talk when I just wanted to make an account.
